2018 Season Report – Under 14W
The season started with a lot of promise for the U14’s this year. 37 Registered players was a great achievement for the Club. The 37 included 2 players from our U13 age group.
Despite the large numbers, injuries and other commitments soon took a toll and there was a few weeks we barely managed to get one team on the field.
The boys played with great enthusiasm all year and competed very well against Clubs with strong squads in Division 2. If not for a draw against Willoughby and an after the bell loss to Cromer the team would have been semi-final bound.
The last couple of games showed what they were capable off with a tough 3 tries to 2 loss against Mona Vale and a great win over Cromer at Nolan’s. These teams finished first and second in the competition.
Thanks to all the new players who joined our team this year. They added a real spark and gave the returning boys a big boost. As a team I believe we were much better at the end of the season and it is a credit to all the boys for their hard work and commitment.
Jack Mac was really solid all year at fullback, brave in defence (maybe too brave). Isaac and Jayden were safe and aggressive on the wings, playing well above their weight. Jovi was great for us until a broken arm from rugby ended his season early, as was Theo until a broken collarbone cut short his first year of footy. Byron and Finn were excitement machines in the centres, scoring and setting up a number of great tries. Lachie and Indra kept the team on the front foot and organised our attack well.
Backrowers Logan, Mac, Shannon and Callum were great in defence and at times electrifying in attack. Liam and Hayden were the bookends in the front row, making hard yards and were assisted by Will when available. Joel was excellent out of dummy half and tackled well above his weight division. Nathan was ever dependable coming off the bench to fill gaps as required.
Rory was outstanding all year both in the centres and the backrow.
A number of boys played a lot of first division this season but two of these really made a big difference when they were available for us, Tom and Billy were both tough in defence and consistently strong in attack.
Again, it was a pleasure to coach the boys this year. There will be a number of challenges they will face as the boys grow into young men and I believe the efforts and discipline they show on the footy field will greatly assist them in facing these challenges.
Thanks to all the parents who helped out with the team or around the club this year. Special thanks to Manager Paul, Coach Steve and Squad Coach Jason.
