2017 Season Report
This season was a frustrating season for the coaching group and I’m sure the player’s due to a number of reasons. We have a high number of boys that play school rugby on a Saturday, which affected our preparation. We had absolutely no luck with injuries and sickness this year with a number of serious injuries keeping players out for up to 10 weeks.
I was very proud of our boys and in particular the games where we had no reserves or we had to draw on younger players from our under 14’s. We ended up finishing 3rd getting knocked out in the final against a very physical Narraweena side. In the week leading up to the final, we thought finally we would have our full squad to pick from for the first time in the season, but those plans lasted about 4 days losing 2 players on the Friday before our final to sickness. We put up a fantastic effort in the final, one that I was very proud of as a coach, they went down swinging, losing 22-16. Whilst we didn’t achieve winning the grand final we learnt valuable lessons along the way, we saw one of them in our final game when the team had a one in all in mentality and refused to be intimated by a much bigger and more aggressive side.
Another pleasing aspect to the year was the new player’s that joined our squad this season in Dan O’Donnell, Jake Watmough, Jack Thelander, Marcus Mastroani and Cooper McMichael. All boys did themselves and our club proud, playing well and learning our structure and fitting really well into our side.
I’d like to thank our manager Gabbi Stubbs for all her help this year and for being so organised. A big thank you to Trent McCann and Simon Healey who assisted me this year, they did a great job and it was really good having another opinion and voice.
To all the great volunteers in our club in particular Foxy, Flo, Jacky McCauley, Stefan Ell, Suzie Ell, Greg Keogh and Kati Cummins who have worked really hard in making sure our kids are taken care of in a safe and enjoyable manner.
And of course a big thank you to the parents who get the boys to training and games, which is often hard work with a busy schedule.
In summary I have again thoroughly enjoyed coaching this team and seeing them develop their game. Our goal as coaches is to always develop the boy’s game and this year we spent a lot of time looking at numbers, setting up and running the right lines and playing for each other. Congratulations to all the boys for being a group that get on great, respect each other and are willing to work hard.
I would like to wish the following boys all the best with the emerging Harold Matthews Squad (under 16) with Manly. Tom Jarrett, Zane Dunford, Jake Watmough, Dan O’Donnell, Toby Newy and Declan King. Good luck to Benji Gallacher & Jack Previtera who are both part of the North Sydney Harold Matthew’s squad and Blair Healey who is with the Roosters squad.
Thanks to the Under 14 boys who helped us out at times throughout the season, Jonah Wildash, Jesse Michniewicz, Noah Smith, Patrick Ell and Jamie Tam.
