Manager: Sandy Blank
The maroons had a great year, for me the highlight of the year being the game V Narraweena where the boys threw the ball around and defended ferociously. They were narrowly beaten in the end and it was a fantastic game. Some will say the boys played their best against Cromer which was a big victory for the boys and yes they played very well. However against Narraweena they battled a bigger and a far more skillful better side, the boys never gave up and they believed in themselves, threw the ball around and gave their all. I could not have been prouder of them.
I am sure in the future if the boys continue playing together they will only improve further regardless of which code they play, however the biggest thing holding them back is self belief. The boys have the ability to beat any team in the competition however; I believe a lack of belief in their own abilities is all that is holding them back.
From the 2016 team we had all the boys return and a number of new boys that made up the Maroons team who are as follows:
Sam BLANK & Charlie BLANK – The backbone of the team, fearless in attack and defence, they cause major problems for the opposition, a fair few problems mum & dad and some for me but at least they are consistent. Wonderful young men and they lead the team well around the park.
Ben BOUSIE – Another new addition to the club – Benny improved significantly throughout the year and he caused all sorts of problems to opposition teams. Ben has a great kicking game and when those long legs get going he is a major headache for teams.
Henry CONNICK – Another new one, Henry is a young man that trains and practices hard on his skills, he is a dream to coach and his skills are exceptional in both attack and defence. For a first year player he had a wonderful year and all going top plan he will be back again next year.
Ollie DAVIES – There was some doubt as to whether Ollie would be back this year due to school however we lured him back with the promise of red frogs and snakes and he came back bigger than ever. Ollie was strong in the middle and ever reliable to give 100% every game.
Jack DONNAN – Jacks no-nonsense style of play is great for the team, he is ever reliable and solid in defence and solid in attack, he is one of the boys that just does his job and does it very well.
Toby GIBSON – Another new addition to the team, Toby slotted in as one of the playmakers in the team and he was fantastic throughout the year. Toby has a great kicking game and a real games awareness.
Sulli MASTERS – Another strong year for the young man, was rested for a couple of weeks after trying to cut his toe off with an axe mid season, a tip for young players listen to dad when he says stop when you are playing with an axe. Sulli has great game sense and was one of the improvers throughout the year.
Jesse MATHESON – New to the game Jesse is a little energiser bunny that just keeps going and going, with a big cheeky smile he had a great year. Jesse plays well above his weight and he would regularly play 2 games a weekend and loved every minute of it. A great addition for the team and the club and he is a must for 2018.
Jesse NABLE – Jesse is back where he belongs in the cerise and blue coming from a family of Manly Christian Brothers Players. A tough young man, with great determination & a passion for the game. Jesse’s defence was tough and his ball running likewise, a quiet achiever.
Billy RYAN – Fresh from Forestville, Billy fitted into the team seamlessly, Billy has great speed and scored a number of tries from all over the park. Billy battled with severs in the knees through the year and he was tough and a great asset to the team.
On a personal note I had a great time this year though at times it may not have seemed so. Each and every one of the boys are great young men that you as a parent should be extremely proud of and as a parent you should be even more proud of the way you have raised them into fine young men.
Thank you mum’s & dads for entrusting your sons with me it has been an honor and privilege to be associated with them.
Thank you to everyone that helped out during the year whether sitting on the bench, sending emails, washing uniforms, in the canteen or BBQ or at training as without you these boys would not have improved as they have.
A special thanks to Sandy BLANK, for all your patience with me and my inability to navigate emails at times.
To the boys thank you again, well done you bunch of champions and see you all next year.
